Upper GI Endoscopy

Upper GI endoscopy, also called gastroscopy, is a procedure used to examine the upper digestive tract, including the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. A flexible camera is passed through the mouth to allow the doctor to examine the lining of the digestive tract and, when required, perform procedures such as biopsies or removal of selected polyps.

Upper GI endoscopy may be recommended for symptoms or conditions such as:

• Persistent or recurrent heartburn and reflux symptoms

• Difficulty or pain while swallowing

• Persistent upper abdominal discomfort

• Unexplained nausea or vomiting

• Gastrointestinal bleeding

• Anaemia requiring gastrointestinal evaluation

• Suspected ulcers or other abnormalities

• Evaluation of selected gastrointestinal lesions

What can Upper GI Endoscopy detect?

Endoscopy can help identify conditions such as inflammation, ulcers, bleeding, polyps and other abnormalities of the upper gastrointestinal tract. Biopsies can also be taken during the procedure when clinically indicated.

Therapeutic Endoscopy

Endoscopy is not limited to diagnosis. Selected therapeutic procedures can also be performed using an endoscope, depending on the condition and clinical requirements.

These may include:

• Endoscopic biopsy

• Removal of selected polyps

• Treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding

• Removal of selected foreign bodies

• Other endoscopic interventions where appropriate

The appropriate procedure is determined after assessment of the patient's symptoms and clinical findings.

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography, commonly known as ERCP, is an advanced endoscopic procedure used to diagnose and treat certain conditions affecting the bile ducts and pancreatic duct.

During ERCP, an endoscope is passed through the mouth into the small intestine. Contrast imaging and specialised instruments are used to evaluate the bile and pancreatic ducts and, when required, perform therapeutic procedures.

ERCP may be used in selected cases involving:

• Bile duct stones

• Bile duct obstruction

• Obstructive jaundice

• Bile duct strictures

• Selected pancreatic duct disorders

• Certain complications involving the biliary or pancreatic ducts

Therapeutic ERCP may include procedures such as removal of bile duct stones, sphincterotomy or placement of a stent when clinically indicated.

Because ERCP is an advanced procedure with potential risks, the decision to perform it is made after careful evaluation of the patient's condition.
