Types of Thyroid Surgery

Recovery After Thyroid Surgery

Patients are given instructions regarding wound care, activity, medications and follow-up. After total thyroidectomy, thyroid hormone replacement is generally required. Thyroid hormone levels and medication are monitored during follow-up. As with any operation, thyroid surgery has potential risks. These may include bleeding, infection, voice changes related to the recurrent laryngeal nerve and changes in calcium levels. These risks and their relevance to the individual patient are discussed before surgery.
