When Is Gallbladder Surgery Recommended?

Gallbladder removal, also called cholecystectomy, may be recommended when gallstones or other gallbladder conditions cause significant symptoms or complications.

Surgery may be considered in situations such as:

• Recurrent or symptomatic gallstone attacks

• Acute or recurrent inflammation of the gallbladder

• Complications related to gallstones

• Gallstones associated with pancreatitis in appropriate circumstances

• Certain gallbladder polyps or other gallbladder abnormalities

• Other gallbladder conditions where surgery is considered appropriate

Not every person with gallstones needs surgery. The decision depends on symptoms, the findings on imaging, the presence of complications and the individual's overall health.

Laparoscopic Gallbladder Surgery

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the most commonly used surgical approach for gallbladder removal.

The procedure is performed through small incisions in the abdomen using a camera and specialised surgical instruments. The gallbladder is separated from the surrounding structures and removed through one of the small incisions.

Compared with conventional open surgery, laparoscopic surgery may offer smaller incisions, less postoperative discomfort and an earlier return to normal activities for appropriately selected patients.

The choice of surgical approach depends on the patient's condition, previous surgery, anatomy and other individual factors.

Robotic Gallbladder Surgery

Robotic surgery may be considered in selected gallbladder procedures depending on the patient's condition and the surgical requirements.

In robotic surgery, the surgeon controls specialised instruments through a robotic surgical system. The surgeon remains in control of the operation throughout the procedure.

Robotic surgery is not necessary for every gallbladder operation. During consultation, Dr. Rambhia can discuss whether a laparoscopic or robotic approach is appropriate for the individual case.

Gallbladder Surgery and Bile Duct Stones

Gallstones can sometimes pass from the gallbladder into the common bile duct and cause obstruction or jaundice.

When a bile duct stone is suspected or confirmed, additional evaluation and treatment may be required. In selected cases, an endoscopic procedure such as ERCP may be used to remove stones from the bile duct.

The treatment plan depends on the location of the stones, the presence of obstruction or infection and the patient's clinical condition.

What Investigations May Be Required?

The evaluation of gallbladder problems may involve:

• Clinical examination and medical history

• Abdominal ultrasound

• Blood tests where indicated

• Liver function tests

• Other imaging such as MRCP or CT when clinically required

What to Expect After Gallbladder Surgery

Recovery after gallbladder surgery varies depending on the surgical approach, the patient's general health and whether there were complications or associated conditions.

After laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, patients may experience some abdominal discomfort, bloating or shoulder-tip discomfort for a short period.

Your doctor will provide instructions regarding diet, activity, wound care, medications and follow-up. The timing of return to normal activities varies from person to person.
